How to reduce puffy eyes?

In a perfect world, puffy eyes wouldn’t even be a thing.

In the real world, a bad night’s sleep, a few days of crappy eating, too much salt or a night on the sauce can make the brightest eyes turn to the puffy side.

What to do if you wake up puffy?

The best thing you can do to reduce puffy eyes fast is to cool them down. Here are 3 easy ways to do it:

  1. Gently roll an ice cube in a figure 8 around your eyes, crossing at the eyebrow centre. The figure 8, the infinity symbol, is soothing and practical. It covers all the puffy areas but avoids your actual eyes. At the same time, it will help you chill out and relax too.
  1. If you have more time up your sleeve, put a damp cloth in the freezer for 20 minutes. When its ready, lay down with your legs elevated and place the cloth over your closed eyes for another 20 minutes. The cloth will absorb the heat from your eyes while the elevated legs return fresh circulation to your face. Fab!
  1. If puffy eyes happen to you often, you might like to pop your used tea bags in the fridge and save them for those puffy days.

Cooled tealeaves have been used traditionally by so many cultures for this very purpose, and they still work!

You just need to have them ready in advance.

What if puffy eyes are a regular occurrence?

If you’re waking up with puffy eyes too often, check in on your sleep.

Good quality sleep is one of the best ways to prevent puffy eyes. These tips can help:

  • Aim to go to bed around the same time every night to set a regular sleep rhythm
  • Avoid sugar and alcohol at night
  • Minimise blue light exposure in the last few hours before bed. That’s laptops phones and other devices. Blue light glasses might be your new eye-loving best friends!

It’s not just sugar and alcohol, but salt as well

Excess sugar and alcohol will disturb good sleep, and they both give your liver extra work to do.

A congested liver has long been associated with puffy eyes, dark circles and eye bags. No fun.

Give sugar and alcohol a break for a while and see how your eyes respond.

Salt meanwhile, can cause fluid retention.

That’s a key reason eye puffiness exists. You can combat this with extra green vegetables and less processed foods in your diet.

Gentle massaging under the eyes with an outward sweeping motion is a good way to move fluids out too.

Invest in a naturally cooling eye cream

Eyes are delicate. You want to treat them nice.

Look for pure, natural ingredients without harsh chemicals or anything that might cause irritation.

Aloe Vera leaf is one of the best natural cooling ingredients and works wonders for tired puffy eyes.

Green tea, white tea, in fact, most tea extracts are so for cooling for puffy eyes – just like the good old-fashioned tea bag!

A little Vitamin C in your eye care products will reduce stagnation too, and that’s also a welcome addition.

If you suffer puffy eyes, show them some love with Wild Bee Gentle Eyes.
