Australian Bee Propolis – Better for you, better for the bees

So many people have never heard of propolis, and equally as many people have never heard about native Australian bees!

But they’re both very special. Here’s why…

Australian native bees:

When we think of bees, most of us think of chubby, furry, black and gold bees which, although cute, pack a nasty sting if disturbed.

These are European bees, introduced to Australia in 1822.

Australian Native bees are very different.

They’re not chubby, nor furry, they don’t have golden stripes and would you believe, some of them are totally stingless too!

Native bees are highly effective pollinators and play a vital role pollinating and protecting Australia's unique wildflowers and bush land.

Propolis:

Propolis is a natural resin found in all beehives. It’s used to build parts of the hive, and to seal and protect the hive entrance. The ‘protective’ action of propolis comes from powerful antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

These qualities have made Propolis a popular healing remedy used by many traditional cultures for thousands of years. Propolis is used to treat a range of concerns from inflammatory skin issues and wounds to sore throats, poor immune function and more.

Like all bees, Australian native bees use propolis to build and maintain the health of their hives. Unlike other bees, native Aussie bees build almost the entire hive from propolis!

Australian bee propolis is very dark – much darker than common honeybee propolis. It’s scientifically shown to have TWICE the medicinal qualities of honeybee propolis.

That’s why we love using Australian native bee propolis in our Wild Bee skincare products.

But like bees across the world, native Aussie bee colonies are under threat…

With land degradation and clearing of rainforests and bushland, Australian native bees need support, not only so to protect their own future, but to safeguard the future of the native plants and wildflowers of the Australian landscape.

We’re committed to protecting our native Aussie bees.

We partner with amazing beekeepers, like Francois and Mariki Visser, in Queensland, whose life work is to restore Australian native bees to bushland and rainforests.

While producing premium Australian bee propolis for medicinal use, Francois & Mariki work hard to optimise bee health, increase bee numbers and improve Australian native bee population growth.

It’s a better, more sustainable life for more bees

Francois and Mariki manage their bees like parents nurturing small children. Their beekeeping practices are like no other and include:

  • Hives spread through diverse bushland and rainforest areas
  • No exposure of bees to harmful chemicals or pesticides
  • Taking only small amounts of propolis from each hive
  • Extracting propolis in a manner that causes no disturbance to the bees
  • Providing nutrition to the bees if adverse weather affects their food sources
  • Leaving the honey behind; it’s a major food source for the bees, especially when external food is scarce

Natural healing agents like propolis are a gift from nature.

Supporting the plants and animals that give them so generously is our obligation.

At Wild Bee, we’re grateful to have the opportunity to share the healing power of propolis, and be part of the process of healing and restoring populations of our incredible Australian native bees. You can help too…
